Valentine's Day this year was run over by a snow storm. A day later though, my boyfriend bought me an Amy Brown fairy. I was so excited as it was the one I had previously seen in the store. The store that he bought it from- Spencers. A store loathed by Christians.
My mother asked me where my boyfriend bought my fairy, and apparently it did not sit well with her that I had entered the store before. She had told me that I should not be supporting such a store because of the things that it sells. Of course, the other day I went into the store and bought a fairy to sit next to the gift my boyfriend bought me.
An online friend calls this compromise, though I simply call it shopping. Where else am I to buy my fairies?
I am not one to really care what a store sells as long as they have something to sell me that interests me. I do not care what they support, nor do I care much about who the people are unless I am there enough to get to know people. This doesn't make any sense to me. All I wanted to buy was a simple fairy collectible...
Condemned for shopping?

While I'm sure your mother meant well, I don't think it was right of her to tell you what to do.
You were buying something that interested you. It's your life, you should have the right to buy whatever you want. What you were buying was harmless and was not hurting anyone.
I can understand why Spencer's is not liked by many Christians, for it sells merchandise that many Christian people would not like. But so do many other stores.
For example, I work at Barnes and Noble, the bookstore. We carry a large variety of Christian books, bibles, and all sorts of pro-religious items. However, being a book store in a free country means that you must carry books on all different views. Thus we carry many books that are anti-Christian, including science and philosophy books that argue there is no God. We also carry Satanic bibles.
While I am not a really religious person, I did have a Christian upbringing. I would never buy one of these anti-Christian books becuase I do not believe in them. I certainly will not stop supporting the store though, because I also have a belief in the freedom of speech and the right of anyone to buy whatever books they choose.
But I digress. All stores, not just Spencers, carry potentially un-Christian items. Department stores like K-mart and Wal-mart sell 'the Da Vinci Code' (I probably mis-spelled that). They also sell birth control items that many Christians do not like. Gas stations sell pornographic magazines such as Playboy. Movie theatres show violent horror movies. Something also not liked by Christians.
My point here is that if your mother doesn't believe in buying from a store that sells merchandise she does not like, then she has a whole lot of other places that she probably should never go to. Including almost every store, gas station, and movie theatre. If you are a Christian person then you have to make the right choices for you, and not worry about the rest of society.
If you don't like something, don't buy it and don't partake of it. I commend your resistance of temptation in doing so. But DO NOT try and prevent other people from living their life they way they want. To do so is judgemental, something that according to the Bible should be done only by God. "Judge not, lest ye be judged."
Now that I am off my soapbox, let me summarize: you did not do anything wrong in buying your fairy collectible.
Buying fairies in Spencers is a whole lot easier than finding them under toadstools! I say get 'em where you can.
There IS another side, though. If you knew that Nike was exploiting the overseas child labor market, or that Walmart was cutting costs by denying healthcare plans to its workers, would you still support them? Tougher call.
Josh, I completely agree...
I mean, every store has something in it that people do not support. I think my mother hates spencers because just about every item in the store is something she considers evil. I sort of get the feeling that she considers fairies evil because when i showed her the Jessica Galbreth fairies... she was like, "they all don't look very nice". Either way, I will get fairies from wherever they sell them because they are not the easiest collectibles to find... and I don't really care about spencers either- they just pretty fairies.
Mama Vengence, I did hear bad things about Wal-Mart... though I still shop there because they have the lowest prices..
Nike... I hate sports, so I don't buy Nike. Though I did have a Nike coat when i was like...hmmm, 13 or so. I saw these adorable Nike boots at the shoe store though. I hate sports, but these winter boots were girlie and cute.
Basically, I just care about the merchandise I want... really, I don't look into "behind the scenes", or ask questions.... I just get what I want and pay for it. I went in Spencers because my friend told me they sold fairies...
